Choose your enemies wisely

If I were Jeff Bezos, I would consider this a fair warning and hasten to the White House to determine what the God-Emperor requires:
Donald Trump wiped around $5.7bn dollars off the stock market valuation of Amazon in less than two hours on Wednesday, with a tweet attacking the online retail giant for “doing great damage to tax paying retailers”.

Amazon’s shares lost 1.2 per cent of their value in pre-market trading after Mr Trump's comments.

The President tweeted: “Amazon is doing great damage to tax paying retailers. Towns, cities and states throughout the US are being hurt - many jobs being lost!”

Donald J. Trump ✔ @realDonaldTrump
Amazon is doing great damage to tax paying retailers. Towns, cities and states throughout the U.S. are being hurt - many jobs being lost!
Now, Amazon has been absolutely great to us. We have not had a single problem with them outside of the one time an SJW employee abused the power of his position, and they handled the situation beautifully. No complaints at all.

But given how Google, Twitter, and PayPal have been behaving, it is important that Amazon not follow their lead into an SJW-converged death spiral.

VD - from an economic perspective rather than culture war one, should Amazon have to face an anti-trust action or would that do more harm than good?

And the edge that not being taxed gives them is certainly real.

I personally like Amazon. They have been nothing but professional with me. But it was already company policy to attack symbols of "hate" like the Confederacy, even before this.

If we keep trusting massive centralized companies, we will keep being hit. We need to rely on a decent sized core of fanatical loyalty: after that, the extra customers a company gets are all gravy.

Fuck Amazon, Trump is absolutely correct and they need to be brought to heel or at the very least level the playing field. All we are going to be left with is Wal-Mart and Amazon the way things are going.

As a country we are asking for it concentrating that much power and wealth.

Yeah, no. Getting rid of the regulations and high taxes will let locals compete. The main reason Amazon and internet commerce has done so well is because of the lack of regulations and taxes. Buying local often means I'm supporting systems that harm me more directly than an Amazon monopoly.

Not very happy with Amazon today. Bought new hardware (echo dot) and Im supposed to more than double the price I pay for their music subscription to use it fully. I could have just continued carrying the Echo around from room to room. I also see they are starting to make movies that Prime doesn't cover. Not to mention what I have read on here about payments to independent authors. They are getting greedy. People are noticing the greed. The people love nothing more than a President who goes after those they think are swindling them.

Blogger Noah B The Savage Gardener August 16, 2017 11:37 AM

A little OT perhaps, but the term Alt Right makes sense because most of what has traditionally been called the right (conservatives) don't support us. They shoot us in the back.

Not so with the left. The left supports its radicals and gives them cover no matter what they do, or at the very least, refuses to acknowledge their actions. Black BLM supporter ambushes and kills five cops? Let's not jump to conclusions, folks.

There is no Alt Left, there is only the left. I would still call yesterday's press conference a big win but I won't keep using the term Alt Left since it draws a false equivalence between the left and the right.

Blogger Noah B The Savage Gardener August 16, 2017 11:39 AM

I pay sales tax on items purchased from Amazon here in NJ. Amazon hurt and even put out of business many businesses, especially bookstores, that once paid the commercial rate on taxes. Not just retail establishments, but subsidiary businesses such as restaurants catering to shoppers. Of course, their giant warehouses also pay the commercial rate on taxes, but does it make up for the losses on non-Amazon businesses?

Blogger John Morris August 16, 2017 11:43 AM

Better plan on Amazon being converged at some point. Doesn't matter if Bezos starts wearing Pepe t-shirts, personnel is policy and look at the pool they must hire from. If Bezos becomes a problem they will replace him.

Remaining neutral and just selling stuff is quickly becoming "enabling hate" and will be punished. When the demand comes to pick a side we all know which one 90% of the employees will demand be picked. The first items banned will be selected to make it almost impossible to reject the demand, but we know what happens next.

Finally, Amazon has built no affirmative defenses against SJW infestation so Conquests's 2nd Law applies here.

Blogger dc.sunsets August 16, 2017 11:46 AM

On 7/28 AMZN opened 3.2% lower than the prior close. On what did the Cargo Cultists blame THAT, given that Mr. Trump didn't tweet anything about it?

If the press is going to blame EVERY declining stock price on Trump, what else will they be able to write about WHEN (not if, WHEN) stocks inevitably go into a declining phase?

Did they endlessly blame Obama for every down-tick from 4th qtr 2007 to 1st qtr 2009?

Just FYI. I'm not kidding; be ready to see the press raise the roof when it blames Trump for the bear market that MUST come sooner or later. The people who write for press outlets wouldn't know a causal fallacy if it crushed their foot.

Blogger dc.sunsets August 16, 2017 12:02 PM

I simply find it fascinating to watch people demonstrate how blind we generally are. Humans are pattern recognizing machines, so much so that we will create causal relationships where none exist. It's a function of the Control Illusion, i.e., if we can understand something then we can control it.

This is why I'm fascinated with spontaneously organized phenomena. They exist, that is clear, and they fly in the face of our "if this, then that" approach to life. This is (among other reasons) why finance is not physics, and why predicting the behavior of human social behavior is a tapestry of failure. We're living in the age of engineering, and not much will happen of interest until we break out into the age of understanding more about complex systems.

So far, we're pretty much pug ignorant. We might as well be trying to design and build a turbofan engine in 300 AD. There are breakthroughs that still have yet to occur, without which the task is impossible.

In the meantime, it's positively embarrassing to read what's written. As I've said, invariably I get a mental image of a savage right out of Mel Gibson's movie, Apocalypto, telling us why the Sun God did this and the Rain God did that.

About a year ago we noticed a later delivery schedule and one afternoon in passing I mentioned it. Turns out that they must go through the Amazon deliveries as a priority and said that if people used it less that we would get our mail on time.

I sell maple syrup online and pay approximately $18 per package, Amazon only pays $2 per package regardless of size.

In most areas, yes. A local warehouse (or customer fulfillment center, as I think Amazon calls them) still qualifies as a point of presence in a state for tax purposes. That doesn't help with the lost jobs though or property taxes though.

No doubt. It is entirely unnatural to "see" non-linear systems in action. But the world isn't improved by those who never learned how to perform integrals or derivatives (which includes me.) You and I know that it is an invisible fraction of people, people who have a gift for reaching into the darkness and pulling out a candle, who raised us step-by-step from the nearly static barbarism of 10,000 years ago. If humanity is to continue ascending that staircase (a path that is far from assured, of course, as history is not positivist) then men who are by far more insightful than me will tease out and make use of things to which I'm utterly blind.

I type on this computer using products whose existence rests on a host of insights I wouldn't have reached even if I lived a thousand years. Unlike the Leftist clowns and non-ASP/non-European-ancestry sad sacks who outnumber us, I'm quite grateful for what my ancestors built for me to enjoy.

The architects of our comforts, those who reduced the risks of premature death due to famine, plague and pestilence to the point where we almost forget they once dominated human life, their work and sacrifice is ignored or reviled by the Left and its billions of pets. The pets, steeped in envy and humiliation, will burn down the very structures of their own comforts in order to vent their impotent rage at The Builders (my ancestors.)

Were it not for people of mainly UK/European ancestry, no Chinese would have invented the steam engine or the microprocessor. No African would have overcome the obstacles to heavier than air flight. No Pakistani or Indian would have sussed out germ theory, antiseptic surgery, antibiotics and MRI's.

The science underlying our world was not inevitable. It was an extraordinary product of coincidence, without which all humans would still live in conditions no better than those of the 1600's, when most of the world's children never made it to adulthood. Leftists piss me off, because they take this world for granted, and given a long enough leash, they'll push us all back to that world, a place dominated by pain and suffering.

The only thing that would make this move more ironic is if those monuments were shipped away in Mayflower trucks.

One because the owner died and his son did not want to own a grocery store. The other because it was located across the street from the projects and they had more stolen than they sold.

Of the local hardware stores, one closed because the owner went to prison for trying to hire someone to kill his wife. All the others are still open.

@37 This is why I'm fascinated with spontaneously organized phenomena.

While that is mildly interesting, spontaneous organization is not what is happening in the Left, and this is an incredible weakness for the Alt-Right.

The Leftists ARE organized. This is the only way they have been successful in getting people riled up for (insert SJW cause here). While their practical implementations within governments and culture have been mostly abject failures over time, they continue to be highly successful in mobilizing effective groups of protesters. They have a full-time recruiting arm. They have spy networks. They have training programs. They have communication networks. They have resource management. They have wealthy financial backers. They have a playbook.

What does the Alt-Right have? A couple of websites (like this one) where we come to have the truth we see in the real world validated. And, ummm....

We need to start thinking about organization. It doesn't have to be hierarchical, but it does need to be organized. The Alt-Right is currently in a state of attempting to break out of reaction mode, but, IMO, it needs to start being more strategic. Monday's discussion of 4GW was entertaining, but I see no one in the Alt-Right capitalizing on it. The only person that leveraged C'ville was a guy that is not part of us. (I am speaking of President Trump, for those midwits like me that might not get it.) Heather Heyer is on track to become a martyr, symbol, and icon to be wielded a club against the Alt-Right, right or wrong. What are we doing about that?

We have opportunity that slips through our fingers due to this lack of organization. You don't see the Left letting opportunity get away. Hell, they misdirected us on a wild Russian goose chase for months. That takes massive amounts of organization. That is what we should aspire to IF we really want to use their own tactics against them.

@78 FALPhil

One thing to remember, when comparing the Right vs Left, is the Right can never bring as much pure anger & self-delusion to the party. The anger fuels them, but it has to be directed. These aren't people that want to go home and read a nice book. That's why the entire Media Complex is designed to keep them with an emotional hate-high.

This is how they captured most of the Institutions. But most of that was done decades ago, but the control networks simply didn't exist. Everyone used to be "spread out". Now people across the world are taking flak for the bad optics spun out of an event that they tried to kill the rally goers.

Even then, the Alt-Left doesn't enjoy that much support. It's probably important to remember that DC's preferred Immigration approach has a ~7% approval rating with the rest of the country. The Media Bubble really skews perspectives.

Gulag, Twit, and GayPal are all located in hyper-leftwing California whose state government is an extremely powerful monopolistic leftwing bully.

Washington isn't as leftwing as California - Trump did 14% better - and their corporations don't seem to be as politically oppressive, so far.

As far as gulag's concerned,I wish Trump would have signed an executive order severing all federal government business with Gulag and prohibiting federal workers from using Google on the job after the James Damore firing.

He should also consider something like a James Damore Employee Freedom and anti-corporate Fascism Act in order to reduce intimidation of employees who politely express controversial political or cultural ideas.

Not surprisingly, Gulag has their own leftwing politicized definition of fascism.
"An authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization."

According to gulag, no matter how much intimidation or violence is used to suppress political expression, it's not fascism if it's leftwing or cuckservative.
And no matter how patriotic and benevolent a nationalist rightwing government is, it's automatically fascist.

Given how easily the low I.Q. and immature are mentally enslaved and how influential is gulag, they're indirectly but powerfully responsible for the violent radicalization of the pathetic punks of antifa and others.

Man defends old friend against the alt-left online doxxing and firing from place of employment and attempts to get CPS to TAKE HIS CHILD.

Then the defender gets attacked and sliced open by masked Alt-left

That's pretty tame compared to what I have been dealing with. Suffice to say, I was laughing pretty hard at Vox's comment about not being motivated enough to act.

Yeah, no. Getting rid of the regulations and high taxes will let locals compete. The main reason Amazon and internet commerce has done so well is because of the lack of regulations and taxes.

Why don't we lower the taxes on everything else instead of raising the taxes on Amazon? (pipe dream...?)

A good place to start is non-linear dynamics, with the Black-Scholes model (you can see what an actual derivative is, instead of just a fancy media word) and the logistic map.

Blogger dc.sunsets August 16, 2017 4:28 PM

@78 You're in the tactics, I'm above strategy mimicking a dispassionate observer. What will be, will be. Neither you nor anyone else can choreograph what's coming (or even predict it with enough certainty to benefit.)

The error I think people make is in thinking that we can keep the stuff we like from this Chinese menu, and jettison what we don't like. It't unlikely to be possible.

The life I enjoy exists because of billions of spontaneously organized decisions of tens of millions (if not hundreds of millions) of people. Some of those people harbor ideas that will inevitably destroy some of that cooperation, and thus damage the living standards I like.

But bitching about this is fruitless. I couldn't HAVE those things I like, in the first place, if not for those people whose attitudes are immiscible with mine. We enjoy the highest lifestyles of any humans in the history of Man, in part because during the latest 50 years of collective idiocy, we also got along well enough to ignore the friction so we could get the "goodies."

Sadly, ignoring the friction has become impossible. The vast machine that delivers this cornucopia of hot-and-cold-running goodies to us (from AMZN to INTC to whathaveyou) has its gears full of sand. We CAN'T get along with each other enough to keep it running.

As we roll into that future, some (even much) of what we now take for granted will be unavailable at any price. Some things we really want will be MUCH more expensive (ex: safety & security.) This is because we won't be ABLE to get along with those whose actions are directed by thoughts we consider toxic.

We already can't have some nice things because we're past the apogee of go-along/get-along (ex: mobs of black teens no longer restrain their savagery at malls, at basketball games or county fairs, so we basically can't have them anymore.)

All roads lead through a valley of lower living standards, and possibly declining lifespans. But this recent period was a one-off, an artifact of too-trusting, too-cooperative people. Once hardship reteaches life's axioms, our Posterity will resume building a better world for themselves. Other people(s) are On. Their. Own. High fences make good neighbors.

Finny Fogg wrote:So much for the tolerant left!” cries the far-right. I am intolerant, yes! But of what? I am intolerant of intolerance on the basis of race, gender identity, sex, sexual orientation, religion or nationality. In a word, I am intolerant of bigotry. “You are a dogmatist!” I am a dogmatist, yes! I am irrevocably convinced of the equality of black and white people, of men and women, of the fact that rape is bad, and I want society to be also. Do you mean that I am not ‘liberal’ and that I do not wish to give bigots a platform? To this crime I plead guilty, I do not wish to give Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups a platform. No, I wish to deprive them of that.

Doesn't being intolerant of the intolerant make you intolerant? And doesn't hating haters make you a hater? You realize it takes a high level of self-deception to maintain such conflicting positions, don't you? Another thing you are not intelligent enough to understand is that men and women, blacks and whites are not equal don't you? Equality is a mathematical concept. It doesn't really exist in reality.

Bezos is a businessman first and foremost. I don't know how much he controls the WaPo, but it strikes me that it's run like Amazon - put a bunch of stuff out there and see what sells. Plus, the WaPo still has Volokh Conspiracy, who are pretty well anti-Left.

As for Amazon, most of their money comes from "alt" sources. He may veer Left, but he won't give up billions for demographics that don't use his services (a la Target). Since Amazon is the large alternative to SJW converged businesses (Big 5 publishing, for example), he won't destroy his major demos just to virtue signal. And if he does, give it a couple quarters.

If Bezos were to publicly virtue signal, he would have done so by now. He's had two years and it hasn't really happened yet. I'd say wait and see - Bezos may just sit out of the politics altogether.

On a semi-related note, yesterday morning as I began my work day, I opened Vox Popoli while I prepped for my first meeting and started knocking down the email queue. No problems.

However, returning to my desk at lunch and tried logging into Vox Popoli and lo and behold, it is now blocked at the corporate level with the signal that "this site has been blocked. Reason: Intolerance".

So, getting more and more national attention has finally gotten VP blocked. I'm certain the memes being sent out were the tipping point that triggered some SJW to go through the effort to get this site added. Alphagame has been blocked for awhile.

Not a big deal, since i can browse at home and this will help ensure that I stayed focused while at work. But wanted to let you know that a certain threshold was crossed this week.

Praise God.

First, companies shouldn't BE paying taxes(at the very least at the current rate). So on that point, go Amazon! Second, I consider Trump's comment here as poor. Minimally bureaucratic, at worst fascist/socialist. Jane, you ignorant slut! He does really well then, just for no good reason, sticks it in a pickle slicer... threatening to get them both fired.

Yeah, but I guess that was a known from the start, innit.

I'd like to see Amazon reduced to ashes. Same thing with WalMart, Starbucks, Whole Foods, and Target. Couldn't happen to nicer companies. All of 'em, straight to dust.

Anonymous Jack Amok August 16, 2017 8:44 PM

People saying buy local should ponder what is better for their local economy, local retailers or local producers. And then realize Amazon does a lot to enable producers.

Snidely,

I don't know your particular point(s). Afraid to just explain? I would be too, if I were you.

Though I remember when it was Walmart. Stealing from those poor (robber-baron) mom and pops. Filthy thieves, robbing every chance they got. If that is your secret "other" thing? In any case, I neither support m&p's, taxation (which, by the way wasn't he for cutting (?)), nor probably any reason to support even small business if it comes with inappropriate tax.

There's a couple of problems with Amazon. One is that they have a massive amount of Chinese counterfeit products being advertised as genuine. It's so frustrating now that I often resort to ordering from the actual company instead of Amazon. It's the reverse of what Amazon has been doing to local retailers where people go into the stores to look at products then buy from Amazon. For those who have issues with Amazon, use them like this. The other issue is that the working conditions in Amazon warehouses are brutal. There's plenty of documentation on this.
