Three and three

If conservatives, Republicans, and the Alt-Right want to survive the conflict with Antifa and the violent forces of globalism, then all of them would do very well to read this book: 4th Generation Warfare Handbook. I would strongly advise getting the paperback, both for future reference and the ability to share it with others.

This is not a practical guide. But it establishes core principles that need to be understood, from which specific practices and policies can be developed.

The Three Classic Levels of War

The three classic levels of war – strategic, operational, and tactical – still exist in Fourth Generation war. But all three are affected, and to some extent changed, by the Fourth Generation. One important change is that, while in the first three generations strategy was the province of generals, the Fourth Generation has given us the “strategic corporal.” These days, the actions of a single enlisted man can have strategic consequences, especially if they happen to take place when cameras are rolling.

What succeeds on the tactical level can easily be counter-productive at the operational and strategic levels. For example, by using their overwhelming firepower at the tactical level, state forces may in some cases intimidate the local population into fearing them and leaving them alone. But fear and hate are closely related, and if the local population ends up hating the state forces, that works toward their strategic defeat.

Fourth Generation war poses an especially difficult problem to operational art: put simply, it is difficult to operationalize. Often, Fourth Generation opponents have strategic centers of gravity that are intangible. These may involve proving their manhood to their comrades and local women, obeying the commandments of their religion, or demonstrating their tribe’s bravery to other tribes. Because operational art is the art of focusing tactical actions on enemy strategic centers of gravity, operational art becomes difficult or even impossible.

Three New Levels of War

While the three classic levels of war carry over into the Fourth Generation, they are joined there by three new levels which may ultimately be more important. Colonel Boyd identified these three new levels as the physical, the mental, and the moral levels. Furthermore, he argued that the physical level – killing people and breaking things – is the least powerful, the moral level is the most powerful, and the mental level lies between the other two. Colonel Boyd argued that this is especially true in guerrilla warfare, which is more closely related to Fourth Generation war than is formal warfare between state militaries. The history of guerrilla warfare, from the Spanish guerrilla war against Napoleon through Israel’s experience in southern Lebanon, supports Colonel Boyd’s observation.

This leads to the central dilemma of Fourth Generation war: what works for you on the physical (and sometimes mental) level often works against you at the moral level. It is therefore very easy to win all the tactical engagements in a Fourth Generation conflict yet still lose the war. To the degree you win at the physical level by utilizing firepower that causes casualties and property damage to the local population, every physical victory may move you closer to moral defeat, and the moral level is decisive.

Some examples from the American experience in Iraq help illustrate the contradiction between the physical and moral levels:
  • The U. S. Army conducted many raids on civilian homes in areas it occupied. In these raids, the troops physically dominated the civilians. Mentally, they terrified them. But at the moral level, breaking into private homes in the middle of the night, terrifying women and children, and sometimes treating detainees in ways that publicly humiliated them (like stepping on their heads) worked powerfully against the Americans. An enraged population responded by providing the Iraqi resistance with more support at each level of war, physical, mental, and moral.
  • At Baghdad’s Abu Ghraib prison, MPs and interrogators dominated prisoners physically and mentally – as too many photographs attest. But when that domination was publicly exposed, the United States suffered an enormous defeat at the moral level. Some American commanders recognized this when they referred to the soldiers responsible for the abuse as, “the jerks who lost us the war.”
  • In Iraq and elsewhere, American troops (other than Special Forces) quickly establish base camps that mirror American conditions: air conditioning, good medical care, plenty of food and pure water. The local people are not allowed into the bases except in service roles. Physically, the American superiority over the lives the locals lead is overwhelming. Mentally, it projects the power and success of American society. But morally, the constant message of “we are better than you” works against the Americans. Traditional cultures tend to put high values on pride and honor, and when foreigners seem to sneer at local ways, the locals may respond by defending their honor in a traditional manner – by fighting. After many, if not most, American military interventions, Fourth Generation war has tended to intensify and spread rather than contract.
The practice of a successful Fourth Generation entity, al-Qaeda, offers an interesting contrast. Osama bin Laden, who came from a wealthy family, lived for years in an Afghan cave. In part, this was for security. But bin Laden’s choice also reflected a keen understanding of the power of the moral level of war. By sharing the hardships and dangers of his followers, Osama bin Laden drew a sharp contrast at the moral level with the leaders of local states, and also with senior officers in most state armies.

The contradiction between the physical and moral levels of war in Fourth Generation conflicts is similar to the tension between the tactical and strategic levels, but the two are not identical. The physical, mental, and moral levels all play at each of the three classic levels – tactical, operational, and strategic. Any disharmony among levels creates openings which Fourth Generation opponents will be quick to exploit.

The former. They haven't rehabilitated the Nazis in 50 years of trying, so they're not going to do it in the 16 or so years that America has left.

This is not a practical guide
Can you suggest one?

Anonymous Grayman August 15, 2017 9:37 AM

To some degree I think these principles only apply in any real depth when you practice limited engagements, constrained violence. Go back to the Romans or the Assyrians. Unrestrained violence applied in a targeted manner can negate the dilemma posed by the physical, the mental, and the moral levels present in constrained violence engagements.
The levels are still present yet you completely wipe out the underlying cultural ties and social structure of the opponent. Take Iraq as an example; engage in total war, anyone who rises against you is eliminated immediately with extreme prejudice as well as anyone associated with them. If that’s the only step you take you foment guerrilla war due to having lost moral cache by the unrestrained action. If however you then replace a significant portion of the local population with a mixture of sunni and shia from disparate parts of the nation you break the social ties that allow for moral blowback. When you bring in the relocated population you provide them with rebuilt housing and infrastructure on the stated premise that if they rise up they face the same fate as those they replaced. If they stay neutral at a minimum they have a better life and will be left alone.
That’s grossly simplified but it is essentially a combination of the Roman and Assyrian tactics and hypothetically would break the social bonds to such a degree that the only cultural ties that are left are what is provided by the dominant force in the way pf relocation of populations to rebuilt infrastructure. The cultural transmission needed for moral outrage can be broken and the nebulous strategic centers of gravity of the opponent are shattered as you have scattered the peoples into the greater masses.
In many ways this is also essentially what they are doing to the west with mass immigration, its simply a slow motion version. On top of that we do not currently have the stomach for this, the imagery would be rather graphic.

This draws a lesson exact opposite the one that should be drawn from the Iraq War. That being, when one side can't even shove a flashlight up your ass without causing a shitstorm in its own camp, and the other side will shoot you and your entire family without blinking, you know VERY WELL where to place your true loyalty in case of conflicting demands.

That's on top of the usual banalities of guerilla warfare, like "it can go on forever, as long as you have an unsecured and impossible to secure border with an actively hostile power that has tied to large parts of your population".

In the 4G handbook, this is covered under "the Hama model". Political factors usually rule this option out.

The Hama model refers to what Syrian President Hafez al-Assad did to the city of Hama in Syria when a non-state entity there, the Moslem Brotherhood, rebelled against his rule.
In 1982, in Hama, Syria, the Sunni Moslem Brotherhood was gaining strength and was planning on intervening in Syrian politics through violence. The dictator of Syria, Hafez al-Assad, was alerted by his intelligence sources that the Moslem Brotherhood was looking to assassinate various members of the ruling Ba’ath Party. In fact, there is credible evidence that the Moslem Brotherhood was planning on overthrowing the Shi’ite/Alawite-dominated Ba’ath government.
On February 2, 1982, the Syrian Army was deployed into the area surrounding Hama. Within three weeks, the Syrian Army had completely devastated the city, resulting in the deaths of between 10,000 and 25,000 people, depending on the source. The use of heavy artillery, armored forces, and possibly even poison gas resulted in large-scale destruction and an end to the Moslem Brotherhood’s desires to overthrow the Ba’ath Party and Hafez al-Assad. After the operation was finished, one surviving citizen of Hama stated, “We don’t do politics here anymore, we just do religion.”

I think history would judge you much more harshly for that act then it would for simply wiping out the target population.
Forced medical alteration of a significant population would actually achieve the goal of surpassing hitler from a moral outrage perspective. People dont like death but do accept it as an unpleasant part of life.

The dictates of 4GW only apply if you care what the news says about you. If you, for example, exterminate entire tribes in an area using overwhelming force, the surrounding survivors won't mess with you. For examples, see Iran, China, Russia, Venezuela, etc.

Embrace the power of "I don't care." Feel the might of "Now, who else want some?"

Of course, these only work while you're willing to maintain the power and fear. But that can be maintained for generations, often centuries. See, for example, ancient Rome, ancient and modern China, Russia for the last few centuries, the Spanish conquest of the New World, etc.

A few of them see it coming. The Forward this morning: "Stop Outing Nazis. Your rights depend on theirs."

I have a feeling the next guy who pulls out a Nazi flag at one of these rallies (like the one coming up in Boston this weekend) is going to get dogpiled and given a flag suppository. The fact that you call it a free speech rally doesn't mean you have to be a sperg about it and allow anything at all.

Apparently the web site Vice spliced together a couple minutes of rally attendees looking clean and peaceful as a church picnic, with several minutes of a few others yelling things like "Gas the Jews." Nothing you can do about that, but you can keep them from filming you in the same shot with it.

Looks like at least some people suspected Unite the Right of being a honeypot back in early July. Too bad that word didn't get out more, but I suppose no one wanted to listen to people who started with "Kessler is a Jew who..."

@35 - depends on who is writing the history. The Arab slavers routinely made eunuchs of their millions of sub-Saharan slaves taken over the centuries, losing 50%-90% of them in the process (using a dull knife to reduce bleeding, of course); there is not a lot of sub-Saharan gene material in ME bloodlines for this reason. They do not seem to get a lot of flack for that these days. OTOH, Rome imported vast numbers of "intact" slaves; by the fall of Rome more ethnically non-Roman citizens lived in Rome than actual Roman gene-line Romans. Hey, wonder why it fell?

regarding 21st century tactics: on-ground observation is showing twitter is increasingly [shut down] since the election via overlapping suppression of any counter-narrative messages.

The use of profiling like that done for targeted ads followed by shadow-banning, throttling, and banning has resulted in a ~90% reduction in visibility to TrumpTwitter.

Further, Twitter has employed the same profiling to amplify SJW's.

The result:
Major TrumpTwitter accounts which used to spike in at 35k retweets now spike at 2-3k.
This is the same as low-level "verified libreral" accounts with less than 2k followers.
Major SJW accounts now spike in at 150k, which under the fairer, pre-election algorithms were only reachable by Bernie Sanders, Barack Obama, or Elizabeth Warren

We have established neutral or friendly platforms, it's time to move to assist their destruction of their user-bases so they're fully out of the main stream by the time the next election comes.

That's because name-calling is effective, at a minimum for rallying your own guys.

However, If you claim you are on the right, and happen to disagree with something going on and choose to make that opinion public, you deserve to be called much worse than cuck. This isn't the 1990's, this is open warfare, and lending aid and comfort to the enemy should be called just that. Buck up ittle cowboy, the days of being able to publicly attack those you supposedly support, claiming high principles, without any consequences, are over. Sure there are drawbacks to that. But there are much bigger drawbacks in ending up like Steve Hayes, Ben Shapiro, and Bernie Goldberg - allying themselves with ANTIFA (normalizing them) by choosing the violent leftist radicals, over the less that Mensa radicals on the right.

If the current cycle holds to the last (as it mostly has so far), the earliest it would be in serious trouble is around 2025, at the end of the next bear market. The next bull market would begin sometime around the 2030s. Most likely that is when it would die, by then Chinese and Indian GDP will require using domestic currency, and chronic deficits will unleash runaway money creation in the USA.

There is currently a soft coup underway in America. It's not clear yet how effective it will be, but there's definitely big money behind it. One can't deny that in many places the law has been suspended, but for only one political side.

It's also not obvious how to effectively fight it.

OpenID aew51183 August 15, 2017 12:57 PM

@66

It is obvious how to effectively fight it.

Civil rights law is clear on denying equal legal protection. The mayor of c-ville comitted criminal acts by ordering the stand-down of police there.

All that's required is for Trump to direct the DOJ to investigate the failure of leftist mayors to maintain law & order and to hold them to account through the feds.

This is why I'm so angry about his latest presser: it's clear the establishment snakes in the WH are covering for antifa and preventing this subject from reaching his ears.

Here's an interesting (and long) article from January about the history of revolutionary violence in the US, the differences between the capabilities of Left and Right, and some predictions. A few notes from the summary that jumped out at me:

"The hard Left will use the tactics it’s already using. The hard Right will use Leftist tactics, at which point the Press will become very interested in denormalizing those tactics."

"Look for lots of property destruction, by everyone. I would not be surprised to see innovative tactics used to destroy property."

"Everyone will have enemies’ lists. All of us are already on somebody’s."

"If we get political violence between civilians, it’s mostly going to be low-level until it abruptly isn’t."

"You do not want white people to riot. You Do Not. Want. White People. To Riot."

Anonymous freshlycuthair August 15, 2017 1:44 PM

One more quote from that article I posted, because I chuckled from the familiarity:

"As commies, Weatherman is into in fomenting revolt among the working class. Their problem, they keep discovering, is that working class wants to beat the shit out of them."

Anonymous RobertL August 15, 2017 1:53 PM

This is similar to what Gen. Sir Rupert Smith calls "War Amongst The People", military operations by a multinational force against non-state actors. To a large extent, you're not preparing for such a war. Neither side is going to patiently root out the 'terrorists' from a largely compliant population, because the US is not a province of Empire from which The Spice Must Flow, it's facing a 'controlled demolition' to cover the looting and cents-on-the-dollar sale of real estate to the usual suspects. This will be a period more closely resembling the guerilla wars in places like E. Timor and El Salvador between local security forces and insurgents, with a much greater parity in operational capacity, and a selective blindness to the militia excesses that both sides will perpetrate within days of 'war' breaking out. 4GW will be resumed if a peacekeeping force that trades manpower for technology is deployed. Then you need to work within the framework for the best outcome for your side following their withdrawal and a return to the political level.

Well... Vox (the leftist site, not VD) interviewed some conservatives in Alabama, and they're all blaming Antifa, BLM, and George Soros. They also generally believe Fields panicked after he was bricked by Antifa or BLM, and therefore was not malicious intent.

Sure, the media is trying to spin it as a moral defeat for the Right, but they've also been saying for months that Trump has been colluding with Russia. The media's virtue-signaling masks how much a huge chunk of white America completely despises them and won't listen to a word they say.

It's most effective to call someone a faggot when they're probably straight but exhibiting some of the stereotypical characteristics of faggotry, like weakness or timidity. If you're attempting to insult someone who is openly or quite likely gay the word faggot has lost its sting, and you need to up your game and call them pozzed or a bug chaser.

It did not occur to either the police on the ground or Antifa or BAMN that having the cops hold back would work out in our favor.

Also, our side was smarting from two beatdowns where we honestly were not trying to start shit. We were angry and focused. The way we were disarmed and the way Antifa marched in with all their weapons was documented and filmed. They did not have a good way to spin this.

And this gets to the crux of the matter. How do you have a "Free Speech Rally" and then not allow Neo-Nazis to speak? Well... the only way to do that is to acknowledge that some speech is so repugnant that it should be prohibited (or "de-platformed"). And this is where Antifa steps in and demands that oppressive, anti-immigrant Trump supporters hand over their microphones.

Sometimes the right option is to not play the game.

Rallies, protests, and activism are all the domains of leftist agitators. It is not an effective toolset for the Right.

An interesting excerpt, but I have one quibble with it.

Reading Outlaw Platoon by Lt. Sean Parnell, the US troops there tried very hard to win that moral level of war, especially with the local Afghani villagers. This was in contrast with the Al Qaeda affiliates, who would rape and torture their little boys.

Surely, they had won the moral level? Well, no. At a key point, the Afghani villagers didn't warn the US troops of a landmine they saw being planted the night before. On the contrary, they came out to enjoy the show.

Which indicates that morally a domestic Muslim jihadi, no matter how much he may rape and torture their little children, is STILL preferable to a foreign infidel who gives them food and medical supplies.

I saw signs of this a few years ago when militia right blogs started talking about destroying food, water and power to cities and how relatively easy it is.

The problem though is the media can't calm it down , it has low legitimacy now,

Enough people assume Pravda and ignore it . I mean the average age of a Fox viewer is like 70 and the other networks aren't much younger either. The radicals on either side won't be shut down by CNN or MSNBC bleating anyway.

And while turning off websites is possible, it too is going to be regarded as tyranny not helpful to getting the message out

The USG has extremely low legitimacy on both sides, the Far Left hates it, The Right loathes it and no one even the center trusts it or almost any institution except the military and in some areas., homogeneous small towns mostly the local police .Oh and some local churches too.

As to the gent who predicts a dollar collapse in 2020 , ah no. Not in three years.

All that aside if Trump shuts down the violent Left and makes sure that the Right can freely speak, this will actually dry up most of the rallies which is good and bad both

This rally was a shit-show but its did cement the message that the Right needs to clean house internally and keep the HitLARPERS (thanks btw to whoever invented that term) in check.

Anyone wearing or displaying Nazi regalia or throwing roman salutes need to be sent packing

This won't quell AntiFa or the lies but it will deal with the bad optics.

In my opinion, 4GW operators will have to be like water, the harder the fist clenches, the more escapes until the fist is holding nothing. It also frustrates your enemy, leading to emotional overreaction which gains sympathy from locals. This is the sea you want to both, operate out of, and disappear into, at will. The Wests fetish-like affinity for uniforms, flags, and symbols will have dissipate. Why would you want to tell the enemy who you are? Traditional ranking structures are irrelevant as well. This is a shift in mindset which might prove too hard to overcome for many people in the west due to hundreds of years of first, second, and third generation warfare. Initiative at the individual level, operating under the complete absence of orders is vital. Small unit operations, such as raids, ambushes, and assassinations will be valuable, thus sniper and ranger training are excellent bases to begin to learn from. The ranger handbook and sniper FM are easy enough to get. Keep in mind that they are very conventional still and will need to be modified according to each operations METT-TC (mission, enemy, time, troops available, terrain, and civilians on the battlefield). That last one is probably the most important these days.

Anyway, this is all theoretical, of course. Just some thoughts.

ACLU / Soros will be funding a lawyer in Durham tomorrow.

An interesting note: the ACLU argued for Unite the Right in getting their rally permitted by the judge. They take a right-wing case once in a blue moon so they can pretend to be objective and focused on civil rights, so I assumed that's all it was. But it fits pretty well into the idea that the whole thing was a setup.

This is random, but it struck me.

The Soviets failed because they lost the 4th Gen War at the start. As Vox has pointed out, the communists actually never killed the cultures of the countries they conquered. Why? Because everything important went underground. There's also the revival of dedicated Christianity *during* the Communist rule.

The Communists lost at the moral level at the start. This is also why all of the major Fascist movements were successful. Franco won the Spanish Civil War and no one talks crap about him, do they? That was a meatgrinder of a civil war, but the Communists had already dehumanized everyone (and the church) which left Franco with a freehand to respond.

You can go on forever trying to contradict the Leftist slanders, and you'll never succeed, because they don't care what your answer is.

The Alt Left Media don’t care what your answer is. But your ultimate audience is not the Left. It is the Normal People.

Show don’t tell.

When normal Americans are shown an image of other normal Americans, and the image is labeled “Nazis!” don’t you think that provokes cognitive dissonance in the mind of the normal?

How do normal Americans react when they are shown an image of people carrying swastika flags and the image is labeled, “Nazis!” ?

Why are you still carrying that swastika flag? Are you really that much of a dumbass?

Gee, that's what they would do if they were part of a honeypot. What a strange coincidence!

Robots can be made arbitrarily strong and don't need to sleep.  If you are short of people to lift patients, change beds, vacuum floors, scrub bathrooms etc. a squad of robots is just the thing.  An unfamiliar situation means "flag a human to intervene".

Given deep learning, after enough repetitions unfamiliar situations become familiar and within the repertoire of the robots.  This will occur very rapidly as a fleet of robots will share data, learning much faster collectively than any individual could do by the same means.

When the mechanical assistance and monitoring parts of elder care are largely automated and much of the rest is done by telepresence, most "old folks' homes" may disappear as people remain in their own homes.  That's going to radically reduce the cost of the population bulge of elderly in Japan and Europe.

It's also going to make it obvious that the "necessity" of a horde of turd-world workers to care for them was a lie all along.  That's going to be the real impact.

Abu Ghrabi did increase enrollment in the resistance. They come from a society where the police can arrest you for any reason, keep you as long as they want, torture you for fun, and hang you if they wanted to. When the locals found out that the Americans would only talk to them or have you form naked pyramids for cute American babes, while feeding you good meals. Of course they will enlist. Jihadists do not want to be hurt, let alone killed. They know the 72 virgins is a lie.
When Islam invaded the Iraq region they formed camps outside of the cities. They would only enter the cities in large numbers to collect tribute. After a generation of this they slowly moved into the cities. History is just repeating itself. The Americans should have set up Kitchener camps, where the genders are separated. After five years, we would have learned who would have been our obedient lackeys. Also, Americans are too soft for their own good.

It will take much more than that. An example is the Middle East today, were Kurdish and Yazadi women have taken up arms in large numbers to fight against ISIS. The traditional ideas about women't places in society will be difficult to reimpose when there is the example of a 500 woman battalion of "Sun Women" (escaped Yazadi sex slaves) gunned up and geared up hunting for their former captors as a counter example.

People need to have both the negative and the positive examples to see and emulate. Robotic workers, regardless of their advantages, are not an inspiring example for people to emulate in this kind of struggle.

You misunderstand.  Robotic workers aren't examples, they're labor-multipliers which eliminate the argument that we need more non-White labor.

Imagine the value of a robot which can change a diaper or administer a bottle in the middle of the night.  You can even put mommy's face on it.  If it works cheaper than a nanny, a lot of White women will have kids they wouldn't have otherwise.
